You Gotta Love Mac

Taken from the Wikipedia on the Life of Carl Sagan.

In 1994, Apple Computer began developing the Power Macintosh 7100. They chose the internal code name "Carl Sagan," in honor of the astronomer. Though the project name was strictly internal and never used in public marketing, when Sagan learned of this internal usage, he sued Apple Computer to use a different project name — other projects had names like "Cold fusion" and "Piltdown Man", and he was displeased at being associated with what he considered pseudoscience. Though Sagan lost the suit, Apple engineers complied with his demands anyway, renaming the project "BHA" (Butt-Head Astronomer). Sagan sued Apple for libel over the new name, claiming that it subjected him to contempt and ridicule. Sagan lost this lawsuit as well; still, the 7100 saw another name change: it was lastly called "LAW" (Lawyers Are Wimps).

Kat, I have a iBook G4. It has been a fantastic little machine. I played on a brand new Dell recently and was appalled. It froze within 10 minutes of usage. My iBook has froze MAYBE a grand total of 3 times the 2 years I have owned it, and then only because I was running pro tools and itunes simultaneously. (the bug worked out in the next pro tools version)

I also own a dual-core G5 Mac Tower. It has about 2.7 gigs of memory and it is a wonder. I LOVE IT. It takes about a second for Photoshop CS to open.

Do you remember what it felt like when you got your first mac? PC people don't understand this until they come to the light.

Operamama, you obviously are not a part of the Mac family, are you?

I'd love to comment on this, but I have to admit that I'm right there with operamama. I don't know enough about computers to be too choosy. This is the reason that I was a chemical engineer and not a computer engineer. :)

A mac...Do I have a mac? I've had several, too many actually to be humble. I love what I have now....I grabbed a 12inch PB G4 before they dissappeared forever! I love it, threw 1.25 gigs of ram into it and it's bloody fast! It's become my personal apendage. Her name is Gia...that's right. She has added so much to my everyday life that she deserved a name.

Owning a mac changes everything you ever thought about computers and their role in everyday life.

Good question.
-Adium for chatting
-Safari for browsing
-VLC for movies
-iPhoto for pics
-Final Cut Pro for film
-Logic for Music editing
-Shapeshifter for making my computer reflect the mood I'm in by how it looks.
-handspring and mac the ripper for letting me keep the films I like
-Limewire for helping me get what I can't afford
-Cubase for making me sound amazing on stage

That's pretty much the bulk of it! anybody else have good suggestions?

Hey Kat! Sorry for the belated answering. Things got a bit busy here the past few days. I am definitely going to check out quicksilver. It sounds pretty darn nifty. I love it that you found a program that Joey had not used! It is a rare thing.

I use pro tools, Photoshop CS, Garage Band (i find Logic a little bit of a pain in comparison to Garage band and if I am going to go through all the trouble I'll just use Pro tools.) I got rid of Limewire to stop my addiction to pirating, even though the only thing I would jack were things that I had already bought before or lost. But, stealing is stealing so did the ole' delete thing. I really have enjoyed my Ibook G4 but I do wish I would have opted for the 12' powerbook instead. It was more powerful and about the same price as the 14' iBook.

The tower on the other hand, is just downright dreamy. Fast a lightning and smooth as silk. I am about to up the memory to 4 gigs and see what that does. I think that'll be all the speed I need for a while.

I also have the video ipod and we plan on using that for video and multitrack stuff when we go on tour.

That is awesome Kat. What a great weakness to have. All women should have that weakness! I am eager to try out quicksilver. How much does it run? (cost)

I love Mac!! I have the 17 inch PowerBook and I love it very much even if I don't use to to it's full potential. It is the very same computer that made me fall in love with Mac in the first place. It was a wonderful computer named Mia and her daddy loved her very much. Up until the day that he dumped black russian down her keyboard. Oh Joey... how could you?
